Acoustic Pleasures (2)
There we go again, new music discoveries are waiting to be shared:
While the new movie was not really all that terrific, the »X-Files« music still sends shivers down my spine. I remember how I fought with my parents to watch the show. Back in 1994, when the show started on German TV, we didn’t have a VCR. So I held my audio tape recorder against the speakers of the TV and recorded the audio, always hushing my mom or dad when they spoke up during those 45 minutes. I loved the show and experiencing it only through audio left quite an impression on me. So my new music discovery is “X-Files (UNKLE Variation On a Theme Surrender Sounds Session #10)” by Mark Snow from the soundtrack (The X-Files - I Want to Believe).
The biggest surprise in a long time is Sarah McLachlan, my all-time favorite female singer. Finally (I think the first time in 5 years, not counting her christmas album) she is releasing a new single, called “U Want Me 2“. It’s not too depressing (if you are familiar with her music, you know that Sarah’s songs can be quite tearful); actually it’s a nice, melodic single. Unfortunately, the new album which is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2008 will only feature two new songs: “U Want Me 2” and ”Don’t Give Up On Us“. The rest will be a Best Of compilation. Come on, Sarah, can’t you give us more new stuff? Please!!!
A complete new discovery is Gavin Rossdale. Once again, it pays off that iTunes features artists on their start page. I like live recordings a lot because they often have a certain intensity that studio productions lack. I hadn’t heard anything by Gavin before, but a couple songs from his release “Live from Las Vegas At the Palms - EP” caught my attention, especially the song “Forever may you run“. I also like “Can’t stop the world” and “The Trouble I’m In“. His voice quality and the wonderful minimalistic guitar background is soothing and invites you to lay back, close your eyes and just chill. Check it out, it’s worth it!
A surprise was the new song by John Legend. I didn’t pay much attention to this artist until now, but his new release “If you’re out there” is just wonderful. After I listened to it I found out that he seemingly wrote this song for the convention of the Democratic party (where Barack Obama was just nominated to be the Democratic candidate). It fits. But the lyrics do not only fit the huge show event but are true even if you remove the connection to the political event. It’s uplifting and full of hope and I think we can’t have enough of those messages. Call me a dreamer, but if people can be motivated to change something about their life or their believes by music, than this song would stand a good chance of making a change.
