Obama wants to repower America!
If president-elect Barack Obama keeps only half the promises he makes in the weeks running up to him finally relieving the cowboy of his post, he will be an amazing president.
On Tuesday, Obama met with Al Gore, who has been outspoken about the climate crisis for decades now and has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his continuing efforts to raise awareness for the global challenges ahead. (Read more on Gore’s challenge to repower America)
In a short press conference, Obama stated “that the time for delay is over, the time for denial is over”, making it plain that he takes the dangers posted by climate change seriously. Obama went on saying that his administration will play an active role in dealing with climate change issues.
To some it may sound weak, but he is right in saying that this “is a problem, but this is also an opportunity” – new jobs can be created in environmental friendly and protective fields. Considering the current economic situation, where many jobs are on the line, this direction might be one of many avenues that will not only help to get people into work, but at the same time help to protect the environment. This applies not just to the States but to any country world wide.
If the US as one of the major global polluters would really take this bold step, I am sure it would be a clear signal to countries all around the world to follow. It doesn’t even have to be a huge move, but as of now the US has remained defiant when it came to environmental topics. Recognizing the importance of preserving energy, recycling, reducing carbon emission etc. and making it an issue on the agenda of the next president could just be the thing that is needed to motivate other governments – which have been hiding behind the unmovable US – to reconsider their position.
I know I am being very optimistic, but let me keep this hope.
“We are not going to miss this opportunity, my office is going to work with a whole host of stakeholders on this issue, including vice president Gore.”
- Barack Obama, 10 December 2008
