Can a TV show educate? BSG at the United Nations

Originally, I had written this article in the same week as the final episode of BSG aired. It was supposed to be published on another site, but that didn’t happen yet and so I decided, since I spent quite some time writing it, to publish it here.
Background Information: Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (all of the new Battlestar Galactica) appeared on a panel at the United Nations in New York, where issues like torture, war, faith and many other things were discussed and the …

… now sing the title of the entry just as Peter Jurasik sings “Me and my Shadow” on the »Babylon 5« outtakes. Ok, sorry. But that’s just proof that the doctor was right to send me on sick leave until Tuesday. That would make it a whole week.
On Monday, I was happy to go home and got my bike out of the locked room at work. The room is located in the underground garage and when I saw a car leaving, I was following it closely because it meant that the …

When I perused the online newspapers this morning, one topic stood out among all others: the ten year anniversary of the massacre at Columbine High School.
Strangely enough, I only associated this year with the ten year anniversary of my own US High School graduation. Reading the name ‘Columbine’ today brought back many memories and emotions.
In 1999, my year as an exchange student in Michigan was coming to a close. I was fortunate to attend a fantastic school, with great teachers and students and I treasure the year I spent there. …

No, it’s not that time of the year again – NaNoWriMo is still a couple of months away. You have not lost time, don’t worry.
But nevertheless, as countless generations before us have already realized: practice makes perfect. And that goes for writing as well. In addition I have multiple story ideas running wild in my head and I need to get them straightened out.
Right now, I am experimenting with some rather unusual (for me) writing techniques. One of the stories that wants to be brought to (virtual) paper is somewhat …

FedCon VXII (11) – Sunday (Part 2)

It’s been a long time coming, but finally I got around to writing my FedCon report about Peter Jurasik’s panel. Thanks to Intex Digital Sound, who were responsible for the DVD production of the official FedCon DVD, I could bring back many details I didn’t even know I had forgotten *smile*
Dancing in the hotel lobby
Peter’s panel was the my last highlight at FedCon sunday, since I had to leave soon after to catch my flight back home, missing most of the triple-StarTrek panel and all of the closing ceremony. Well, …

Disclaimer: rant ahead with strong language!
What is it with me and external hard drives? All I want is for them to do their frakking job, but no – now my new Seagate Freeagent 1.5TB external drive quit on me! Out of the blue! It’s no even a full two months old; I bought it because one of my original drives died on me and and wanted more backup options. So, this one came home with me and another LaCie drive (1TB). I’ve been backing up faithfully every weekend, but why …

PS: I Love You

Love the book. Love the movie.
Usually I dislike book adaptions; they twist the story until it will appeal to a wide spectrum of an audience and the beauty of the printed pages just gets lost. So I was especially sceptic when one of my all time favorite books was transferred to the big screen.I first stumbled upon ‘PS: I love you’ the year it was released. A friend lend it to me, back then it was the German edition. And boy, did it make an impression on me.
The story focusses …

Moving pictures – Reviews (1)

These reviews have been sitting on my draft shelf now for over two months and I think I get them finally out here. The reviews are spoiler free if not marked otherwise.
Aeon Flux
Futuristic movie about a post-industrial society that lives in the only remaining city on Earth. It looks like paradise, but strange things happen and a group of resistance fighters is trying to assassinate the leader of the remains of the human race. Aeon Flux, part of the resistance, is assigned that task.
The special effects are very nice and …
