Obama visit in Dresden – Recap
I’ve pretty much “live”-blogged the visit of the US president to Dresden, so I guess there’s no need of another article concerning that matter. So, here are just some random thoughts.

Tantrums
Yeah, well, sorry for that. When the police officers suddenly appeared in our office building and bullied us away from the windows it made me cranky. At least the first officers were somewhat nice about it. They asked us to step at least one meter away from the windows. I could understand their reasoning. The snipers outside were getting nervous with all the movement behind our windows and since they were obviously allowed to shoot but realized that we probably were not really a danger, the best solution was to have police present with us. What got to me was the second unit of officers on Friday. They were tense, unfriendly and in my opinion cranky with us. Given the situation, I can somewhat understand them, but still. So, lets call it even. They got their security fixed and we could remain in the building.
Snipers across the building – they really were not happy with the many of us on Friday

Nice police officers
We’ve also had three very nice officers with us on Thursday. They were recording the event from our fifth floor. They were absolutely delighted about the opportunity since they had a grand view and could help with the coordination. Above that, they were really friendly and polite to everyone. Around 7pm my colleague and I brought them some snacks from our vending machine (the police officers did not have security clearance for our building and were virtually ’stuck’ on the fifth floor). The chocolate and gummi bears were received gratefully. And it makes me grin now as I realize that this time it were the East Germans giving sweets to the West Germans
It payed off in more ways than we thought. About an hour later, the officers were descending to the fourth floor were we were waiting. The snipers from across the building had asked them to check us out, just be sure. The officers took a look around, saw that our cameras were only cameras and we were having a jolly good time, and reported that back to the security forces outside. That was probably the reason we were left alone for the rest of the evening. Thank you guys for that!
They even took a picture of the three of them, printed it and left it with a Thank You note for our hospitality at our security desk. Well, we were glad we could help. All of the colleagues present on Thursday were full of praise for the three officers, their politeness and openness. You can come back any time! Especially the officer who seemed to be in charge, or seemed to be the oldest one of the bunch. Are you single? Please let me know!

Parking
Will all due respect for an event that large with almost 4,000 police officers from all around the country involved: you guys need to learn how to park! My colleagues and I didn’t trust our eyes when groups of 5-10 police vans arrived at a time and just … stopped. I refuse to call it parking because it just isn’t parking when you leave your car just when you cleared the street. I estimate that you could put at least 100-150 cars on the Postplatz, properly aligned. With the wild parking by the police units, there was room for about 30
So, instead of practicing to drive escort formation, practice how to park :peace:

Feedback
Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to look at my pictures, comment or increase the traffic to my site and my flickr stream. I really appreciate it, it took a lot of work coordinating it in the last two days. On Thursday, I was constantly running between my desk and the windows, taking pictures, blogging the event, uploading and tagging photos … same thing yesterday. I even went into work again in the evening to upload the rest of the photos. So, thanks to all of you for the interest! (To my colleagues: the embarrassing pictures of us cramped like sardines in the cafeteria while being held in check by the police will be published on the groupshare on Monday
)

I’m too late to the party as usual. Your flikr photos aren’t available today. I hope it is a computer glitch on my end and not some wrangling done by any politicos. I have many reasons to think it a glitch. I got my puter back and it doesn’t seem to feel like its old self yet.
I know. I should have a MAC. It would make my life so much easier. I probably wouldn’t have issues with distractions from all the bells and whistles otherwise. I know. And hey, Mac Guy in the commercials is kinda cute. But I can’t do everything the Wheaton does without looking like a mindless follower.
But yea you! You’re having a great year for celeb contact… I know he was just on your street and in another building. But still. Fun times. I bet James wishes he were still in Dresden. i think he is enjoying Salzburg though.
So who do you get to meet next?

Hey there! Even though I agree with you completely that you should get a Mac (Come to over to the side of light
), this was completely my bad. I had to swap some photos because I changed the copyright watermark. I didn’t know it broke the links. *duh*
And yes, it was pretty exciting. Though, as I have seen on his website, Zachary Quinto got to shake the president’s hand! That would have been something. But even though, seeing him in person (the president, not Quinto), was awesome.
Who am I going to meet next? Well, I hope I’ll get in touch with that cute police officer who was inside our office building on Thursday. Right now, I am keeping my fingers crossed that he’s still single

You are seriously trying to track him down? If so (and this is not some case of broken irony detector on my part) I wish you good luck in your quest and hope that he’s still single.

‘Course I try! 1) He was cute. 2) He was cute. 3) Why not try, just for the fun of it.
Not like a stalker, of course. I just tapped a friend who knows someone and I’ll just see how far it gets me. With my luck, he’s probably married with five children, but then I have at least tried ;)

Hi there!
How awesome is it that you work in a building so close to and with such a great view of the Taschenberg Palais (is it one or two words? My german is just not very good
). Anyway, I currently live in Dresden too, but I was traveling with my family when Obama was in town. I was so bummed that I didn’t get to try to see him up close, but I really enjoyed your posts and the great pictures you took.
Thanks for the really cool recap!

Hello Paoli!
Thank you for your kind words.
I guess we were incredibly lucky that we got to go to work those two days; most of my colleagues would have bet a year’s salary that they would shut down our building for security reasons.
In the end, it paid off for all of us (yes, even those who acted as if the whole thing was an annoyance to them were in the cafeterias on Friday and tried to catch a glimpse of him).
“Taschenbergpalais” is one word, by the way, but I had to check with my colleagues first :D
If it’s any consolation for you: you haven’t missed much in terms of Obama. The general public did NOT get to see him at all; all they could catch a glimpse off was his limousines and his planes. In this regard, we probably belong to a very small group of people who actually got to see him “live and in color” (to roughly translate a German saying).
Again, thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Hello!
Excellent photos! President Obama has been to New York, and I never got a glimpse of him as you did.
Great job, and good luck with the police officer.
